Subject: Freedom of Information Law - zip codes
As requested, I did a search of our opinions for advice regarding disclosure of the city or the zip code of a public employee’s home address for public jobs that have residency requirements. I was not able to find an advisory opinion on point – and I would offer the same advice that I offered over the phone – that in my opinion, if the residency requirement can be determined with the city of the employee’s home address, then release of the city would be sufficient, and would not constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy. In the alternative, if the residency requirement were based on a person’s home zip code, I would advise that disclosure of the zip code would be sufficient, and not an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy.
Please let me know if you have further questions.
